    A qualitative analysis of the experience of referring clients to S.H.A.R.E and exploring the relevancy of S.H.A.R.E’s housing model

    Housing is a constant talking point in Irish society. The housing sector is frequently associated with structural and systemic issues that permeate throughout society. A common challenge faced by people is gaining access to suitable and affordable housing. This is especially true for older members of the population and in particular those who are seeking access to supported accommodation. S.H.A.R.E is a housing charity who provide supported independent living accommodation for the over 60 population in Cork City. The research undertaken is an exploration and discussion of the process of connecting clients to the organisation. The aim of the research is to explore the referral pathway to S.H.A.R.E and to discuss the overall relevancy of the housing model of S.H.A.R.E. This research was undertaken in collaboration with S.H.A.R.E and completed as part of a CARL initiative in UCC. The research conforms to social constructionism, an interpretivist approach and a community-based research process. The primary research was completed through conducting six semi-structured interviews with professionals working in the housing sector. The findings of the research illustrate the importance of providing suitable housing for older people in Ireland and the value of having a housing model that allows for ‘ageing in place’. The research also alludes to the importance of communication and collaboration between different housing providers for the benefit of their clients. A number of recommendations informed by the findings are outlined and put forward

    The landscape of the telecommunications environment is constantly evolving; in terms of architecture and increasing data-rate. Ensuring that routing decisions are taken at the lowest possible layer offers the possibility of greatest data throughput. We propose using wavelengths in a DWDM scheme as dedicated channels that bypass the routing lookup in a router. The future trend of telecommunications industry is, however, toward larger numbers of interlinked competing operator networks. This in turn means there is a lack of a unified control plane to allow current networks to dynamically provision optical paths. This paper will report on the concept of optical IP switching. This concept seeks to address optical control plane issues in disaggregated networks while providing a means to dynamically provision optical paths to cater for large data flows

    Low-resistance Ni-based Schottky diodes on freestanding n-GaN

    Schottky diodes formed on a low doped (5 x 10(16) cm(-3)) n-type GaN epilayer grown on a n(+) freestanding GaN substrate were studied. The temperature dependent electrical characteristics of Ni contacts on the as-grown material are compared with an aqueous, potassium hydroxide (KOH) treated surface. In both cases the diodes are dominated by thermionic emission in forward bias, with low idealities (1.04 at room temperature) which decrease with increasing temperature, reaching 1.03 at 413 K. The Schottky barrier height is 0.79 +/- 0.05 eV for the as-grown surface compared with 0.85 +/- 0.05 eV for the KOH treated surface at room temperature. This is consistent with an inhomogeneous barrier distribution. The specific on-state resistance of the diodes is 0.57 m Omega cm(2) The KOH treatment reduces the room temperature reverse leakage current density at -30 V to 1 x 10(-5) A cm(-2) compared to 6 x 10(-2) A cm(-2) for the as-grown samples.     Purpose of review: The skin is home to a diverse milieu of bacteria, fungi, viruses, bacteriophages, and archaeal communities. The application of culture-independent approaches has revolutionized the characterization of the skin microbiome and have revealed a previously underappreciated phylogenetic and functional granularity of skin-associated microbes in both health and disease states. Recent findings: The physiology of a given skin-niche drives the site-specific differences in bacterial phyla composition of healthy skin. Changes in the skin microbiome have consistently been associated with atopic dermatitis. In particular, Staphylococcus aureus overgrowth with concomitant decline in Staphylococcus epidermidis is a general feature associated with atopic dermatitis and is not restricted to eczematous lesions. Changes in fungal species are now also being described. Changes in the composition and metabolic activity of the gut microbiota are associated with skin health. Summary: We are now beginning to appreciate the intimate and intricate interactions between microbes and skin health. Multiple studies are currently focused on the manipulation of the skin or gut microbiome to explore their therapeutic potential in the prevention and treatment of skin inflammation

    Modulation of pathogen-induced CCL20 secretion from HT-29 human intestinal epithelial cells by commensal bacteria

    BACKGROUND: Human intestinal epithelial cells (IECs) secrete the chemokine CCL20 in response to infection by various enteropathogenic bacteria or exposure to bacterial flagellin. CCL20 recruits immature dendritic cells and lymphocytes to target sites. Here we investigated IEC responses to various pathogenic and commensal bacteria as well as the modulatory effects of commensal bacteria on pathogen-induced CCL20 secretion. HT-29 human IECs were incubated with commensal bacteria (Bifidobacterium infantis or Lactobacillus salivarius), or with Salmonella typhimurium, its flagellin, Clostridium difficile, Mycobacterium paratuberculosis, or Mycobacterium smegmatis for varying times. In some studies, HT-29 cells were pre-treated with a commensal strain for 2 hr prior to infection or flagellin stimulation. CCL20 and interleukin (IL)-8 secretion and nuclear factor (NF)-kappaB activation were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. RESULTS: Compared to untreated cells, S. typhimurium, C. difficile, M. paratuberculosis, and flagellin activated NF-kappaB and stimulated significant secretion of CCL20 and IL-8 by HT-29 cells. Conversely, B. infantis, L. salivarius or M. smegmatis did not activate NF-kappaB or augment CCL20 or IL-8 production. Treatment with B. infantis, but not L. salivarius, dose-dependently inhibited the baseline secretion of CCL20. In cells pre-treated with B. infantis, C. difficile-, S. typhimurium-, and flagellin-induced CCL20 were significantly attenuated. B. infantis did not limit M. Paratuberculosis-induced CCL20 secretion. CONCLUSION: This study is the first to demonstrate that a commensal strain can attenuate CCL20 secretion in HT-29 IECs. Collectively, the data indicate that M. paratuberculosis may mediate mucosal damage and that B. infantis can exert immunomodulatory effects on IECs that mediate host responses to flagellin and flagellated enteric pathogens
